About Roatan
Roatán, a Caribbean island, is situated about 65 km off Honduras coast the islands of Utila and Guanaja lie the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands.
The island was once known as Rattan and Ruatan. Its length is around 80 km, and its greatest width is less than 8 km.
The island is supported by an exposed ancient coral reef and rises around 350mtr above sea level. Dive opportunities are provided by offshore reefs. The majority of the population resides in the island's western region.
Winds and the weather
The northern hemisphere's winter months considerably influence Roatan's climate due to eastward trade winds and cold fronts. Especially between May and October, tropical weather waves often directly obscure Roatan. In recent years, there has been an average of 28 °C in temperature, with average annual precipitation over 1300 mm. October, November, and December are the three months with the highest precipitation, while April and May are the two driest.
Airliness
The airport on the island of Roatán has a terminal that receives nonstop service from Grand Cayman, Belize City, Atlanta, and San Salvador operated by United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Cayman Airways, and Avianca, as well as Houston, Atlanta, Miami, and Dallas operated by American Airlines, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, and Dallas, Atlanta, and San Salvador operated by Delta Airlines. Air Transat further provides direct travel from Montreal and Toronto to the island.
Thus, direct domestic flights are offered from La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, and Tegucigalpa by Lanhsa and CM Airlines.
Roatán Marine Park
On the island of Roatán, there is a free-standing, neighborhood-based nonprofit organization known as the Roatán Marine Park. Several concerned diving experts and local companies banded together to form the organization in January 2005 to preserve Roatán's endangered coral reefs. The RMP's patrol program was the primary emphasis of the Sandy Bay-West End Marine Reserve (SBWEMR) at first to guard against overexploitation by unsustainable fishing techniques. The organization stepped up its environmental activities by adding fresh programs to protect Roatán's natural resources, such as infrastructure and patrols, education, conservation, and public awareness.
History of the Department of Bay Islands
The idyllic Bay Islands were the first area discovered in Honduras by Italian navigator Christopher Columbus. At the time of the invasion, inhabitants of the Islands of La Bahia belonged to the Pech ethnic group. They were either captured or sold as slaves to neighboring Antilles islands. Conquistadors from Spain, England, and the Netherlands have all governed the islands since they were discovered.
The 300-year-old English rule over the islands in around 1859. The Honduran government once again had control over Bay Island.
