Met a nice guy today called Bob on the dive boat from west end Roatan. Diving with West End Divers he informed me that he was diving yesterday in Belize. Huh- I thought he must be cruise ship diving I asked him to tell me after the dive what he thought of the reef.
We have a pretty good Marine Park here taking care of things and in every dive briefing we are reminded to protect her. He said the reef was much much better in Roatan than in Belize. This is the same reef system that forms the second largest in the world second only to the great barrier reef in Australia. There you need to do Liveaboard Diving if you are to appreciate it or endure a very long boat ride to get there. Here in Roatan you can be there in 5 minutes ! This is one of the great things about scubadiving in Roatan the water is so calm so warm and inviting and the reef so close. Coupled to the fact that it is a cruise dive location you can find a Caribbean Cruise to Roatan easily. We get lots of ships from many cruise companies offering stops in Belize.
Bob was next off to Costa Maya in Mexico - he told me he would jump online and tell me how that compared.
We dived a site called Sea Quest first and Bikini Bottom second. Juvenile spotted drums and turtles seem to be on every dive at this time of year. I found a pipe fish and was imensely pleased with myself. Let's see how the photos turn out.
I bid farewell to Bob who got the afternoon to enjoy the restaurants of Roatan before joining his cruiseship and I though maybe just maybe I will try cruise ship diving myself one day. For sure there is no other way to sample Caribbean Scubadiving and many islands in one go.
