They never stop in my experience ! the orange off works best for me and is a lot cheaper to buy in the states.
Or there is something called jungle juice which does ok and smells like a chocolate orange.
Good luck with them, I dont miss them right now and hope to get re-aquinted soon.
Did you decide where to dive yet bob ?

nope, since we are going to be on the island for 2 weeks and only going to dive for 8 days or so, we are going to use our first day there to visit various dive operations.
we'd like to do two dives before lunch and then have the rest of the day to tour the island.
we also like to be on bigger boats, that stay out between dives, as compared to coming back in and going back out, because we like just hanging out on the boat between dives, or moving from one location to the other............
we are tentitve to arrive may 5th, but have not bought the ticklets yet

What kinds of prices are around at the moment ? Where are you flying in from. It's a good bet to dive in the morning and explore afterwards, but you will have explored the interior in 5 1/2 days. Still then you just enjoy the beach and the occasional night dive.

Bob, first of all, the place that I recommand for good diving, and a decent size boat is Coconut Tree Divers in WestEnd. They are right there on the corner. Going on my third annual year there next week, and have always had a blast. It was the only boat that actually had a top to it and enough spance for everyone and two tanks each. I ususally do the ten dive package for only $200. I just can't seem to find thier number.
And a good place to stay is down at the end of the road called Paradise Lost or Lost Paradise. Neat little huts right on the beach.
Anyway, Tell me more about the sand fleas. I didn't even notice them my first year. But last year they tore me up! I couldn't even sleep I was itching so much and had big red bumps all over me.
What is this Orange stuff that you are talking about? I want to pick up a few gallons!!!!

Hi Ron
Thanks for taking the time to post, its what keeps this site alive. How did you find us by the way ?
The orange stuff is labeled simply "OFF!" It costs more on roatan since it is imported, There is also a green version which is the deep woods variant for real problematic noseeums.
It used to cost about $5 in roatan, and less in the US I think.

I think we used that last year...not sure. If it is what we used, I think they liked it.
Oh, just a note for using anything with DEET in it. Keep it away from your watch!!! The stuff EATS some of the crystal faces on watches (I would assume the type of fronts are used on dive computers). I had a brand new watch that I had to throw away when it became almost unreadable after a week of spraying off on my arms and not taking the watch off.
One more thought. If you like Steak, and I mean REALLY good steak, you have GOT to try the Argintinian Steak house in West End. Fantastic view, great service and not bad prices at all! I would pay almost twice what it cost there here for a lesser quality steak.
It's to the RIGHT when you come into town on the main road and you are facing the water. Go down a couple hundred feet and there you are!
Ron
P.S. I found you just by trying to find the number for Coconut Tree Divers. I finally figured it out. Had to dail 011 first, then 504-445-4081

thanks ron,
Coconut Tree is on our short list
that is the kind of boat that we like...........we also enjoy, meeting other people as long as the diving is not TOO crowded..............
we plan on using our first full day on the island just driving around, getting the lay of the land, and visiting with dive operations/people...............we want to try and hit the west, north, and south side..............and we are STILL determined to find someone who will rent us some tanks so that we can dive from our back door........

we just bought a couple little bottles of this....
http://www.amazon.com/Woods-Sportsmen-Insect-Repellent-Spray/dp/B0000CBJBD/ref=pd_bbs_6/002-5852593-5046405?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1176058859&sr=8-6
98% DEET, which i'm sure is just great to be absorbing through our skin...............

I think all the best diving is on The West End/West Bay area. West Bay is is more of the tourist trap kind of area...bigger hotels and such. West End is simply one packed sand road It's about 1/2 to 2/3 of a mile long. And it is nothing but a dive town. All of the great Dives spots are within 5 - 10 minute ride. And the only thing in the town on both sides of the street is Dive shop/Place to eat/place to sleep..repeat...about 15 times. It's SO damn laid back, just perfect.
As far as dives that are not too crowded, I'm with you. I hate any dive with more then 8 people. And that's about what he runs out of there. And still have plenty of room on the boat. You see other operations running out there with little John boats and 6 people on board...no way!
Oh, from what I understand, No one will rent tanks there. Mainly, beacue all the dives are so close to shore, that everyone would just swim out to them and not go for the guided dives. It would put dive shops out of business.
And yes, I have some fo the 98% deet stuff too, along with Ultra-Thon (consumer version of the Army repelent, it's DEET, but formulated a bit different) and some stuff with Picaridin from Cutter (supposed to be just as good as Deet, but not as bad for you)....also picked up some vitamin B6 which they say if you start taking a couple weeks before you go, it makes you taste bad to the sand fleas.
I dunno, but I'm taking it all, along with some antihistamine, and some benadryl lotion. Oh, also just a little tiny bottle (like the ones you find in hotel rooms with shampoo in them) with some bleach in it. I heard that if you have a bite, dab it with a que tip with some bleach on it, and it it will get rid of the itching.
Do you get the idea that I REALLY don't want to spend the week itching again?!?!?!?!
6 days and counting!!!!

Well, I only had about a week of the B6 and don't know how much it helps. But I only got bit 5 or 6 times...and 4 of those were at the resturant with the sand floor. But once I got the Deep Woods Off on me, they didn't touch me. And during the first part of the trip, there was a little breeze, and that helps too.
One thing I will STRONGLY recommend for someone who goes there is the After bite ammonia stick. Man that stuff works good. You might have to put it back on every few hours, but WOW. It stings a bit, but not in a bad way...just enough to let you know it's working. Then, the itch just goes away.
Have fun Diving guys!
