Well at the risk of sounding insane I just wanted to introduce myself to subsequent posters on this forum.  My names Andy and I've  been living and working on Utila for the last 7 years and work for the Utila Dive Centre, with what I feel is one of the best job sin the world, I teach people to teach people to learn and love being underwater, in other words I'm an Instructor Trainer for PADI and IANTD.

If I can be off any assistance to anyone please feel free to post and I'll do my best to get back to you.

For now safe diving and hope I'm not alone here for too long!!!!!!

Warm regards,
Andy

Andy,

You're post looked so lonely I felt I had to give it a reply.  My wife and I were in Utila for a week in March.  Our mission was actually to look at potential beachfront property and on the second day we were there we purchased a lot down on the southwest end of the island.

Obviously we loved the week in Utila and the diving.  Since we were there in March we had hoped to see whale sharks but the weather that week was quite poor and we only got to go to the North to dive one day and the seas were so rough it was not possible to spot the sharks.  Oh well, just another reason to go back and visit next spring.

While we were there we stayed at the Colibri Hill Resort and dove with Deep Blue Divers in town.  Next time we'll give your dive op a try.  The thing that really sold us was the fact that there are a line of dive sites just off the beach in front of the lot we purchased.  Our lot is between the developing Utopia Dive Resort and the developing Mariners Landing.  I think the dive buoy is named Black Rock and is the one immediately east of Stingray Point but I could be off a buoy or two.

While we don't have solid plans for building a house on the land at this point we do hope to someday live at least part of the year there on the Island.  It is a great place to be and to dive.

We actually just returned yesterday from our first liveaboard, the Turks and Caicos Explorer II.  My wife and I loved it and were two of only 4 out of 20 passengers who did all 26 dives that were offered during the week.  I think the reefs in Utila are better but we did see a lot of Caribbean Reef Sharks and a few nurse sharks in Turks and Caicos and that was exciting.  I'm afraid we've just about used up our alotted diving (Cozumel twice, Utila and Liveaboard) for this year and its only June.

We're hoping to get back to Utila with our three kids and daughter-in-law in March next year and I bet we'll meet you then.  Our two sons and our daughter-in-law are all great divers and my daughter loves to snorkel and we're trying to get her to try diving.

Have a great dive day,

Guy and Jacque Carrier

Thanks Guy for that very informative post.

I havent dived utila only roatan! hope to change that sometime soon! But to hear that the turks and caicos didn't impress was surprising, I dont know if its that utila reefs are so good, or that turks and caicos were not as good as I have heard.

It is actually nice to hear that the diving is very different on roatan and utila, and the lifestyle too, I'm hoping in a year there will be many posts on both islands and that it will start to profile for random web surfers both islands.

I notice that people use the forum but they dont blog. This is a trend I think.

Thanks for registering and joining, hope you find the website useful. Please pass on the word!

And that goes to all of you!!! Please support us, we are free and can use all the help we can get. Forums die from lack of new posts if they dont get big memberships, as its hard and not reasonable to suspect people can post all of the time.

Maybee and introductory board would be a good idea, where people can introduce themselves and tell us what they are doing? Currently the site offers the possibility for divers to tell us about their dive interests here.

Thanks guy

Hey Calvin,

Great idea! Great site!

I haven't yet been to the Bay Islands, but I'm hoping to later in the year. Guy is my dad, and the way my folks sing about Utila, I can't wait to go.

I hope to see the site really take off. It should be a fantastic resource.

A section devoted to ways of getting to and from the Bay Islands could be cool. It's not the most trivial place to get to and advice from seasoned veterans would be helpful. Just a thought.

One question (don't know where to post this)...can users post avatar pictures? I didn't see it in the edit profile section. Maybe I'm just being dumb.

Hi greg

To change your avatar Look for the links in the forum area to profile then in the left of the forum area forum profile info...Note this is different than changing your dive profile picture. That you get to from the "people" button at the top then selecting your profile.

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I might start a topic in general discussion for getting to the bay islands. It also depends upon season. And changes with the wind lol.

Hi all,

Nice to see yet another place for Utilians to congregate.  We've spent a fair amount of time on the island and plan on spending more soon.

Just saying hi and look forward to a more lengthy discussion in the future!

Hi Trey

Welcome aboard the starship utila-diving.com ! Did you check out the things you can do with your profile yet, like add your favourite dive site and logged dives etc?

What do you like about Utila that keeps you comming back.

We would love to get any stories you might have about diving in Utila or just Utila stories. I would love to see this take off as a community. Do you have any photos you could upload ?

Also do you have any suggestions for the website.

Hi Mojito.  Thanks for your note.

Take a look at my blog and hopefully that will provide a little insight into my interest in Utila.   Grin

You can find the site at http://buildingourplaceinthesun.blogspot.com/

I'll add some additional information to my profile.  I'll look forward to the website taking off.

Well I'm looking to do some cert. dives (OW, AOW, Nitrox).  I was all ready to do a bunch of cert. dives after taking PADI courses here in Connecticut USA, then our diving trip was a bust because the surf was very high in the Florida Keys when we went a couple weeks ago.  Instructor won't lead another trip til Spring, so maybe I'll do something in early 2007 and Utila is sounding interesting.  I could bring the family and see Copan, then come over and do some diving.
