We are a group of 6-8 people coming to Roatan in 2007. We have 5-6 very experienced divers and some with not so much experience. Most of us would also like to be able to tour the rest of the island safely. What are the must-see sites. Where should we stay? Should we rent a car? If so, are there any precautions we should take besides the obvious? We'd like to be on a beach and also have access to shore diving. I've researched a lot on-line but am still in the dark as to the best place for us. How about some advice. Any would be appreciated.

There really isnt any shore diving except coco view, which is a great dive, but a dive which can also be done from elsewhere especially as you are 7 odd and can command the boat somewhat (negotiate with any dive shop). I would never suggest going to stay there or other resort (personal prefs) as there is not much action around that part of the island though (coco's) and I dont like that style of holiday.

How long are you going ? I would go to west bay, as much as I should plug some dive shop friends in west end, (where it is more interesting at night) but the two in fact are commutable ! And the beauty of west bay is unmissable, the island can be toured in a day easily from anywhere. Check some of the links for places to stay here and here http://roatanet.com

How did you find the website by the way.

thanks

I would say that is also depends on how much of the creature comforts you would like.  I will always recommend West End.  All the best dive shops and sites are right handy from there.  And like he said, much more interesting at night.  Very laid back.  Save your money on the car...taxi's are cheap and can take you anywhere for a couple bucks.

Accomidations are cheap all over West End from a whopping $69 a night for your little Tiki hut right on the beack and go down in price from there for shabbier places.  But it you really want to go top notch, try this place.

http://www.vrbo.com/104801

It will sleep 8  or so, and runs $2800 for a week.  By the time you do the math, it's a steal for a biig group like your.  Fantstic view, BIG kitchen  and living area, multiple entries, a small swimming pool, flat screen TV NICE stereo system and on and on....

The one thing I will say, is do some research and find out wether the place you are staying has a back up generator AND is the Air condidtion unit on it.

I know this sounds weird, but the power company there is crooked and very badly run...we lost power THREE times in one week there in the middle of the night.  And the one time the generator kicked on, the AC was not on the circut for it.

Still a beautiful place though

West Bay has the nicest beach, West End is a bit more reasonably priced, has the better nightlife, social scene and bigger choice of dive shops. There are water-taxis that run between West End and West Bay during the day, for $2 per person each way, but not at night!!
You may want to stay in West End and then if you want to spend time on a nice beach, catch the water taxi to West Bay or go by rental car.
There's lots to see by car too, but you may not need it for the entire vacation - one or two days max. unless you like going everywhere by car!
I lived in West End for 9 months, and walked and made use of public transport. Ke-ke (not sure how to spell it) - has a really nice taxi / tour vehicle for big groups and is a friendly, english speaking local trying to make a living. I'll try to find a business card with his number on it because he does airport transfers too, otherwise ask for him at Coconut Tree Supermarket or Coconut Tree Divers. He dives too occasionally!
