The municipality is aiming to pave the West End strip starting in 3 months (the busy season).  What this will do to tourism seems not to have been accounted for.  Apparently, feedback from the community is not being entertained this time around.  In addition, all of the work and planning for drainage and sediment trapping by USAID is no longer being considered.
This is not an opinion in anyway.  I do no represent the Marine Park on this issue.
(We have all been warned about expressing our opinions on the subject).
HELP.

So much for 3 months.....

We were there from April 13 - 20th.  no paving.  It did looked like the bulldozer came around not too long because the road was relativly smooth.   But on the sencond night we were there, a big storm came and hit us.  When we walked down the street, lots of pot holes...and in two places the road was half washed away.

I don't know much about the ecological impact on paving the street, but I do think it would change the quaintness and ambiance of West End.  I don't know...there is something about spending the entir week without shoes and walking down the sandy road.  Smiley

There are also sewarage issues and some of the bigger establishments drain straight into the sea there, this is related to this kind of development.

Roatan is very much still a pirate and corrupt place with hippocrissy everywhere. It will one day in the far future come into line which also has its bad things.

I love roatan for being a bit dodgy too, its what holds it unique.

We too love walking on the sandy road through West End. We were there during the rains of Nov. So what! It was wet, a little dirty from the sand...but, hey...relax and don't worry about it! (Besides, we're from Washington state...at least it was warm rain!) Anyway, paving the road just makes West End like any other little town. It should definately be kept sand...potholes and all. Just deal with it and enjoy the fact that it's unique! We're headed back here in 2 weeks...can't wait!   Grin

Hey Greg,
What happened to the in-depth studies done to see which method was the most environment-friendly?
To enlighten people who don't know (Greg correct me if I'm wrong), the west end road gets graded every so often, normally when it gets really bad. The smoother it gets, the more the taxi drivers and public drive like maniacs. Dogs have been killed and it is only a matter of time before somebody gets injured. A combination of crazy driving and the weather are the normal causes for this road deterioration.
An extensive environmental survey was carried out, and I believe the best solution was to lay an inter-locking grid designed for this purpose, which would fill up with sand, allow drainage and prevent road deterioration.
Now it looks like the municipality, who normally do what they want anyway, either don't know about the outcome of the study or have chosen to ignore it...
