1  ROATAN DIVING / Dive Site Specific Chat / Re: Roatan dive sites on: June 23, 2007, 09:22:46 AM
Hey you guys...

You're leaving out Pino's favourite!!! Grin

There is a site that can be fantastic for finding critters!!! Lobsters, morays, flamingo tongues, arrow crabs, yellow headed jawfish, spotted drums, banded coral shrimp, pistol shrimp, Pedersen's shrimp and even the occasional nurse shark, seahorse and eagle ray... Plus all the other suspects...

Lighthouse Reef cannot be left off this list!!!

You've gotta try Diane's Garden of Eat'n - just outside West End on the Road to West Bay - 10 minute walk or 5 minute cab ride from West End... Ask the locals whether Diane is in town - she goes to the far east often, in which case the restaurant will be closed - never had a meal there I didn't rate 15 out of 10!!! Thai Eastern cuisine - Wasabi shrimp is one of my favourites!!!

West Bay has the nicest beach, West End is a bit more reasonably priced, has the better nightlife, social scene and bigger choice of dive shops. There are water-taxis that run between West End and West Bay during the day, for $2 per person each way, but not at night!!
You may want to stay in West End and then if you want to spend time on a nice beach, catch the water taxi to West Bay or go by rental car.
There's lots to see by car too, but you may not need it for the entire vacation - one or two days max. unless you like going everywhere by car!
I lived in West End for 9 months, and walked and made use of public transport. Ke-ke (not sure how to spell it) - has a really nice taxi / tour vehicle for big groups and is a friendly, english speaking local trying to make a living. I'll try to find a business card with his number on it because he does airport transfers too, otherwise ask for him at Coconut Tree Supermarket or Coconut Tree Divers. He dives too occasionally!
4  ROATAN DIVING / General Discussion / Re: Municipality aims to pave West End on: June 23, 2007, 01:43:12 AM
Hey Greg,
What happened to the in-depth studies done to see which method was the most environment-friendly?
To enlighten people who don't know (Greg correct me if I'm wrong), the west end road gets graded every so often, normally when it gets really bad. The smoother it gets, the more the taxi drivers and public drive like maniacs. Dogs have been killed and it is only a matter of time before somebody gets injured. A combination of crazy driving and the weather are the normal causes for this road deterioration.
An extensive environmental survey was carried out, and I believe the best solution was to lay an inter-locking grid designed for this purpose, which would fill up with sand, allow drainage and prevent road deterioration.
Now it looks like the municipality, who normally do what they want anyway, either don't know about the outcome of the study or have chosen to ignore it...
