47  ROATAN DIVING / Marine Park Chat / How much is a fish worth ? on: June 17, 2006, 07:10:34 AM
I listened with interest to someone talking about a marine / tourist study to work out the real value of a fish in Costa Rica.
So why would you do that?
Well if you know the value and the local people (who live and work there and are the biggest influence on fish numbers) do also you can start to protect them better.

But its a wonderful problem and where would you start. Well Im not tourism guru so I'll just add my thoughts and let this post work away.

One might take a dive operation and try to equate the value of fish to their business for example. This has to be multiplied across all business viewing that fish! We might consider that viewing the fish is the biggest value it has for simplicity first. As food in a restaurant it really has a low value, thats the important message though.

Anyone like to expand on that. Would also like to know if there are any studies on fish numbers around the bay islands.

Hi greg

To change your avatar Look for the links in the forum area to profile then in the left of the forum area forum profile info...Note this is different than changing your dive profile picture. That you get to from the "people" button at the top then selecting your profile.

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I might start a topic in general discussion for getting to the bay islands. It also depends upon season. And changes with the wind lol.

That fishbase site didnt come up with one, but had this chap and then further googling gave me this...

Its sargassum nor sargasium, but its not said to be in honduras? could someone clarify please.
50  UTILA DIVING / General Discussion / Informative post on: June 11, 2006, 06:45:09 PM
Thanks Guy for that very informative post.

I havent dived utila only roatan! hope to change that sometime soon! But to hear that the turks and caicos didn't impress was surprising, I dont know if its that utila reefs are so good, or that turks and caicos were not as good as I have heard.

It is actually nice to hear that the diving is very different on roatan and utila, and the lifestyle too, I'm hoping in a year there will be many posts on both islands and that it will start to profile for random web surfers both islands.

I notice that people use the forum but they dont blog. This is a trend I think.

Thanks for registering and joining, hope you find the website useful. Please pass on the word!

And that goes to all of you!!! Please support us, we are free and can use all the help we can get. Forums die from lack of new posts if they dont get big memberships, as its hard and not reasonable to suspect people can post all of the time.

Maybee and introductory board would be a good idea, where people can introduce themselves and tell us what they are doing? Currently the site offers the possibility for divers to tell us about their dive interests here.

Thanks guy

51  ROATAN DIVING / Dive Site Specific Chat / Re: Sea Quest Night Dive with Reef Gliders on: June 11, 2006, 06:30:36 PM
Hi Mike

Glad to hear you got in the water among the storms, I finally got out sunday with coconut tree. Was a good dive from black rock to the point. I like that as a drift. Would like to get out further at texas itself as I suspect the pelagic activity is best here. Also saw before (not this dive) some sargassian trigger fish before and want to find them here again as they cant be found elsewhere and why is that I wonder???

I know cameron a bit, that dive sounded cool with the storm, i like the atmospherics of a storm and you must have had some real nice lighting going on by the sounds of things. Also SeaQuest must be a great place for the night dive (with all the sand), we only really do lighthouse reef as its close by, but its good there as well I just love the bio-illuminescence I will never forget my first ever experience of those string of perls. We also usually see octopus there at night often. Its a shame we dont see so many during the day.

Good diving all

52  ROATAN DIVING / Dive Site Specific Chat / Re: west end wall on: June 11, 2006, 06:21:00 PM
I finally got to dive west end wall last week end through to texas, a wonderful drift dive. Get plenty of horse eyed jacks and schools towards the end also always almost see baracuddas at texas from memory was no different today.
The current is really nice too and makes it a painless experience, was a great test for my new mares volo race fins! they are real nice I like em and the look cool as well.

West end wall I found typical of the wall here, nothing really special except the fact that you can do the drift to texas.

Today actually did Black rock through to texas, after the stroms I was expecting some visious current but it was quite less actually than last week. I saw even more scools of snapper as well and two horse eyed jacks were mating or dancing for such an event.

It was fun rocking and rolling on bottom time as rolando was pilot for today, he's a funny guy you know.
Do you know him ? Undecided

54  ROATAN DIVING / General Discussion / amature underwater photography kit on: June 07, 2006, 12:09:39 PM
Hi guys

Im looking to get good advice on getting a digital camera for underwater use. I need the camera to be good in and out of the water, and the housing to be good too. I like the sony cyber shot or cannon ixus-how do these perform?

Is it possible to put the red filter on etc..
and on that note who knows what can be done to excessive "blue" images to replace the red, i dont think much can be done huh?

thanks

Hi gr8ful

Yes I maybee someone could post some fish photos and we can guess what they are.
It would be good to have a fishes database on the site here, but would take a lot of work to implement. Thats after assuming someone has all the photos!

any suggestions?
