47  ROATAN DIVING / General Discussion / PelagicVeggie diving in Dubai.. on: June 30, 2006, 01:02:23 PM
A bit off topic but this is interesting.

Went diving in Dubai, part of the time i was trying to find wrecks, swimming around at 25 m in 2 m of viz in a knot of current, one buddy team at the centre the other swimming out on a reel in ever enlarging circles, fun in a perverse way, just for the challenge. there is no diving there at all really, so nothing is really known. we found one of the three wrecks, not that spectacular a wreck but i have never seen so many fish. It was like a piranha film, snappers swarming around this thing wriggling to get into any hole to get away from us. also saw loads of species i've not seen in  over 10yrs, stuff you don't get in the caribbean, emperor angle, lion fish, clown fish, so that was well cool.

Viz is really low, only in the summer, and the water temp was 33 C??!!! not much coral for those two reasons, but Chantal was telling me those species suffer and survive the most extreme temps of any, anywhere, so they are of particular interest.

posted on behalf of PelagicVeggie thanks for that.

49  ROATAN DIVING / General Discussion / Hmmm-not sure I agree. on: June 08, 2006, 06:01:48 PM
That site is great but difficult to quickly see at a more basic sport diver level what I can hope to encounter on a dive here. I think there is interest for sport divers and those new to diving to find and learn quickly the basic fishes of roatan. This the could not easily do with that last site.

I think we could use a few photos and labels accordingly of the more basic fish found here. That is more immediate and interesting than trying to spot a shark, which isnt likely to happen. But learn about finding a more common fish is better.

What is the most common fish found on our reef, does it differ so much from utila as well in this respect.

So the debate I feel is very much open.

my 2 lempiras worth!
