Dont count on whale sharks at either island No 1. 2, sounds like you might prefer roatan to me. It has nicer resorts possibly due to what little there is to do in utila, worth a trip over there though.
Please utila viewers debate this !
I havent dived those other places but im sure it isnt comparable to Galapagos, probably very little is.
My husband and I are debating whether to go diving in Utila or Roatan. We are not budget constrained and would like to stay at the nicest resort possible, but are primarily wondering if there is a difference in the diving btw the 2 locations. We would love to see Whale Sharks. Also would you happen to know how the diving compares to Cozumel/Belize/Turks/Galapagos?
There are also sewarage issues and some of the bigger establishments drain straight into the sea there, this is related to this kind of development.
Roatan is very much still a pirate and corrupt place with hippocrissy everywhere. It will one day in the far future come into line which also has its bad things.
I love roatan for being a bit dodgy too, its what holds it unique.
Im so sorry to hear that bob, I do hope it isnt serious serious. Well like I always say roatan will always be there, its the only way I could leave, we may meet though if you are there then, I really dont know yet.
Dixies is just off west end, a dive map is in the works for roatan, we would like our readers to take their favourite dive spot and write about it as it was dived rather than the usual; max depth what you might see etc... bob make sure you dive the blue channel a favourite of mine. I am going to put together a roatan favourite things list. Im happy to take suggestions for this as I dont want it to center around my taste !
So if you have something favourite in roatan let us know. Click contact us at the top of the screen.
ps also bob what underwater camera kit are you going to be using ?

Thanks for taking the time to post, its what keeps this site alive. How did you find us by the way ?
The orange stuff is labeled simply "OFF!" It costs more on roatan since it is imported, There is also a green version which is the deep woods variant for real problematic noseeums.
It used to cost about $5 in roatan, and less in the US I think.

Firstly, I am in no way responsible for the ramifications of the following info !
don't worry, Take regular precautions and do try not to be anyway alone in the dark if possible, but if you are and something happens its really really bad luck! If you are one of the few statistics then it will be painless just hand over what little paper money (and I ask that you carry around only that what you need do you need your cards ?-really), and I would bet that in the US or UK doing the same is statistically worse.
So Roatan is pretty safe- yes it is. But yes some nasty things have happened here from time to time, just here and in the US we bury our heads or we don't hear about it. I'm touching the wood of my keyboard desk and am sure you guys will have some awesome diving and a fun time. I am jealous you will be there soon and for me it will take longer. I don't think you will need to be in Coxen Hole after dark but you know there are 10 great folks to every pirate there. And being friendly if robbed and thinking that actually they are the modern day robin hoods and we are rich-don't be a hero. all the best an am hopping you post some of the wonderful photos you get above and below the water!
