On Sunday Manuel Zelaya the president of Honduras was taken at dawn and flown to Costa Rica by his own military in a somewhat bloodless coup. Essentially on this day a vote was to be taken which would change the constitution and critically for Zelaya allow him to extend his 4 year tenure, he came to power in 2006. It has been widely condemned http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8125609.stm and as Obama states that this is a step backwards and we don't want to see coups as a method of political change. Also acknowledged was the fact that while it is widely opposed, reversing the situation won't be easy. Of note was Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela's opposition. From safety in Costa Rica Zelaya said "by a very voracious elite, an elite which wants only to keep this country [Honduras] isolated, in an extreme level of poverty" Head of Congress Mr Micheletti was sworn in until the end of Zelaya's current term (next January).
