About Roatan

Written by Mickey Charteris
Roatan lies not only on the world's second largest Barrier Reef, but also along the Cayman Trench: the Caribbean’s deepest waters. This unique position has made it a Mecca for
underwater naturalists and dive enthusiasts. In fact, Roatan's position in the Caribbean has been the defining element in it's strange growth,
and for the many diverse groups of people who have called it home over the last five centuries.

Half Moon Bay Hammerheads

Written by hammerhead

Apparently as Patrick from ocean connections had his last dive in Roatan he was rewarded with a sighting of a Hammer Head Shark in Half Moon Bay. Anders of west end divers last night told me that one was also spotted in Blue Channel. Is this a seasonal occurrence ? Also a lot of dolphins are around at the moment which makes for a positive vibe in my opinion its always nice to go out on a boat not knowing...

I'm back from my visa run and look forward to getting back in the water and reporting more.

Massive Eagle-Ray on El Aguila

Written by calvin crane
Had a fantastic dive this morning of El Aguila (The Eagle) a wreck dive.

Got narked as usual (I'm so lucky) and then to top it off saw a massive (my biggest to date) spotted eagle ray must have had a wingspan of 1.5 meters! This is going to be half the feeling when I one day spot my MANTA - the fish I most want to find.

great dive.

Doing the point with Reef Gliders

Written by Texas
Did a dive with Reef Gliders today, their boat gets there in 6 minutes if its calm! A fun ride.

We dropped cammeron off to get his ticket to milan and headed out. It was me Sarah the DMT (dive master trainee) and Barry the owner/manager so a nice small group. We started quite a way out like I have always dreampt about. That's where the fish school! I'm sure of it , but there was much fish action and a whale shark had been around the previous day and some more boils of fish on the surface in the morning. A rare thing in Roatan this time of year.

We saw many barracudas and one really large one, i wouldn't want to tangle with. There were horse-eye jacks too and snapper, Barry was surprised there were no sharks circling. This was a dive where I wished I had more time even though I was getting a bit cold.

The point is also known as Texas. My divemaster of old Mickey Charteris once told me "you don't fuck around with Texas"

Hole in the Wall

Written by holeinthewall

We sped out on reef gliders skiff to hole in the wall, the sun was glaring warming me up. This is good, I am tired from my morning run and the water looked good.

We drop in on the sand patch and descend toward the "hole" via the chute. The drop off just keeps going, through the hole and down down down .Sufficiently narced at 100 ft I levelled off with the 3 others. I knew I was narked because I was certain the way forward was for me to design ad sell funny t'shirts. The world was good.

Turning left after a short "bottom time" we progressed back up the other chute. Then we headed over to the caves. The caves were full of schooling silver fish, I forget what they call them. There are many interesting looking side caves and to explore these would be very interesting indeed. The caves are not deep. I wasn't weighted quite enough and was breathing with the bottom half of my lung. There was a massive surge the whole dive above 20 ft and the swim throughs were not as accurate as they normally would be. There were amazing blues and turquoise colours of one open cave.

To note only 3 scorpion fish and a big lobster were spotted.

A nice last dive before flying out tommorow. I had cheated the chamber one more time.

Gazing out into the blue By Malcolm Forest

Written by Malcolm Forest

I just had to share this with all you special people because I've spent so many countless hours gazing out into the blue to find the one big bastard that has eluded me on almost 2000 Roatan dives.
hammerheadBut finally, on March 20th 2007 with 3 other guys and some nitrox, on the southside of the point where the wall starts at 100ft I catch a glimpse of something big and silvery out in the blue, yep, my first hammerhead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Utila and Roatan - The Whale Shark

Written by Steve Fox

I like the free swimming nature captured in this whale shark, also good sized and seemingly un-harassed.
